TOKYO, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened mixed Wednesday as Wall Street's overnight lead encouraged buying although this was offset by selling on concerns over Japan's rising number of COVID-19 cases.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 29.44 points, or 0.10 percent, from Tuesday to 28,662.90.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 3.37 points, or 0.18 percent, at 1,852.47.

Mining as well as textile and apparel issues led notable advancers, while air transportation and electric power and gas issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
