TOKYO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks lost ground Thursday morning as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar hurt exporters amid ongoing concerns as to whether U.S. Congress will reach a deal on a coronavirus stimulus package ahead of a new deadline.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 184.61 points, or 0.78 percent, from Wednesday to 23,454.85.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 19.41 points, or 1.19 percent, at 1,618.19.

Air transportation, pharmaceutical and retail-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
