NATO recommends open dialogue with Russia
Osaka News.Net Tuesday 18th November, 2008
The secretary-general of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, has the alliance should re-evaluate its relations with Russia.
He said relations should not be severed, but reconsidered, after Russia's “disproportionate” use of force in Georgia.
At the 54th annual meeting of the NATO parliamentary assembly, Mr de Hoop Scheffer said relations with Russia were a strategic asset and required direct communications.
Georgian Vice-Prime Minister Giorgi Baramidze warned that a new military conflict with Russia was possible unless the international community was on alert against Russian interference in Georgia.
Meeting in the Spanish city of Valencia, the assembly adopted a resolution urging Russia to respect the sovereignty of other nations.
It also called on NATO countries to intensify their peacekeeping effort in Afghanistan, to help train Afghan security forces, to promote democracy and fight drug trafficking in the Asian country.
